A critical processing unit in most refineries. A platinum catalyst in the reactor vessel enables the conversion of mid-boiling hydrocarbon streams from the atmospheric pipestill and other units into gasoline blendstocks. The reaction produces coke on the catalyst, which must be burned off with air in the regenerator vessel. The burning coke supplies the heat needed to crack the oil.
