Flooding

This is overloading of process equipment, with resulting deleterious process effects or unsafe conditions. Examples: (1) excess liquid or vapor flow to a distillation tower tray, resulting in liquid buildup in the tower and poor separation; (2) excess fuel fired to a furnace when there is not enough air to burn it, resulting in explosive conditions in the furnace.
